I’VE ALWAYS spent a lot of money on face cream. Despite being 30, I tell people I’m in my post-teens – some of you may call that Peter Pan syndrome, I just call it bending the truth.
Anyway, I dread the moment when wrinkles will start appearing on my post-teen face so in my mid-twenties I started shelling out in the region of £65 every three months for a very posh branded face cream. I’ve always been ashamed to admit I was spending so much on my own vanity, but now I’ve found an eco and cost-friendly alternative, I tell everyone.
Around 12 months ago I started doing lots of research into homemade products and I started experimenting with shower gels, shampoos and moisturizers. It all started with wanting to reduce the amount of plastic I was using to buy new products, so I started saving the bottles and reading up on natural ingredients and recipes.
I love growing my own herbs and I was delighted to find so many recipes that used them to make beauty products, but of course you can buy them fresh or dried. After working my way through dozens of websites, trying different recipes, I’ve found my favorite go-to all-round DIY moisturizer. This is made using two ingredients: jojoba oil and lavender.
Jojoba oil is extracted from jojoba seeds and has a very unique chemical composition – liquid wax esters similar to those found naturally in skin’s sebum. It forms an oily layer on the top of the skin that traps water in the skin and moisturizes it as well as slowing down the signs of aging. It also removes oil build-up, has antioxidant properties and is great on irritated skin.
Because of its properties, it is also said to be responsible for the decrease in demand for whale oil. Jojoba grows in arid areas, has a lifespan of around 100 years, it does not need re-planting as only the seeds are used and does not require much water – a real green beauty product!
I paired this with lavender not only because it smells gorgeous, but this herb also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. I use this oil on my face every day, but I also use it as a body and hand moisturizer as well as an after-sun.
You only need a few drops, your skin won’t look or feel oily and it’s great in winter and summer.
I’ve been using it now for around 12 months and I’d never go back.
